World War II veteran Rocco Moretto celebrates his 90th birthday today. The birthday is the second milestone this month for the New York veteran. Two weeks ago Rocco was honored at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post that bears his name in remembrance of the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. Rocco was 20 years old when he landed on Omaha Beach and stormed Normandy along with his Company and allied troops. Moretto belonged to Company C, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, “The Big Red One”. Of the 219 soldiers in his unit alone, 217 were either killed or seriously injured, leaving only Moretto and one other GI to survive the war without serious injury.
Happy Birthday Rocco!
